Join Marty for a six part course delving into advanced yoga postures, their preparation and practice.  Engaging in the practice of advanced postures not only provides an endlessly fascinating and variable playground and a joyous expression of our bodies, but also one of the most remarkable growth edges in the entire practice of postural yoga.  As we grow in the practice of advanced asana, so we appreciate the depth available in the most simple posture and the richness of the breath throughout, nourishing our entire practice of postural yoga and our broader physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.
This course not only provides rich information and techniques to establishing and deepening your practice of advanced asana, but will leave you with greater understanding of and richness in more fundamental postures.
Each session will be inspired by one peak posture or group of postures.  Every advanced asana has its roots in a common family of postures and related advanced postures which become available once key actions are mastered, key strength and opening attained.  Each key posture is chosen as an expression of different major actions in postural yoga, e.g. Hip opening, backbending, both symmetrical and asymmetrical, arm balancing.  Each session includes a great deal of practice of and play in and around key postures, variations and transitions in and out of the key posture.
It is a course designed primarily for teachers and intermediate and advanced practitioners, those who are practicing yoga a minimum of four times weekly and have practiced for three years or more.  The intention is both to explore advanced postures and to give you grounding in practicing more advanced postures, and by no means do you have to be able to do the key posture to attend.  Bring a notebook and should you find something is not for you on the day, valuable notes will serve you later on when you do feel ready to go to that place.  If you’re unsure about attending, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
All attendees will receive a ‘zip file’ for each key posture.  This is a valuable resource which I use in planning classes as well as in approaching these poses in my own practice, outlining related and complementary poses, key actions and body parts involved.  As the session unfolds, I’ll outline my process in brainstorming how to approach these postures, giving you valuable insight into practicing and teaching these postures and others.  I’ll also provide access to a short video practice with key elements for approaching each pose after each session.
While the course is designed sequentially and aims to provide tools earlier in the course to progressively strengthen and open towards later postures and sequences, you can attend sessions individually at $55 each, or book in for all six sessions for $200,  Book for all six sessions prior to the 31st of January for the earlybird price of $180.
SESSIONS: 11-1.30pm Saturday
20th February:  GANESHA:  Foundational work for the rest of the course; building strength and stability in handstand, headstand and shoulderstand.
5th March:  SHIVA:  Fearless front body opening; Natarajasana and eka pada raja kapotasana family.  One legged and one-armed urdhva dhanurasana variations and dropbacks.
19th March:  DURGA:  Finding focus, courage and compassion in your arm balances; Koundinyasana I and II, eka pada galavasana and eka pada bakasana.
16th April:  HANUMAN:  Finding power in balanced actions, opening front and back body  Visvamitrasana, kapinjalasana and side plank variations.
30th April:   LAKSHMI-Finding the seat of the yogi and the heart of compassion-Lotus pose, lotus headstand and viparita karani (lotus variation).
14th May:  KRISHNA:  Transforming life’s challenges with strength and vigour-Mayurasana, Pincha Mayurasana, vrischikasana 1 and viparita shalabasana.
